He was described as being in critical condition following the shooting before being pronounced dead Friday at 10 a.m.

A suspect was arrested in connection to the shooting of “Last Chance U” athletic director and retired football coach John Beam, the Oakland Police Department said Friday. Beam was in critical condition Thursday night following the shooting at the Laney College Fieldhouse, the Peralta Community College District said.

John Beam died after being shot at Laney College in Oakland, Calif., where he was athletic director. A man was charged in connection with the shooting.
