Christie Brinkley opened up about her rocky marriage to Billy Joel in a new documentary about the iconic musician’s life. The model married Joel in 1985, and the two welcomed their only child, Alexa, later that year. Brinkley said that she tried to make her relationship with Joel work, but there was one thing that got in the way.

“I don’t think it’s a secret that his drinking got pretty bad,” Brinkley said in Part 2 of the musician’s new HBO documentary, Billy Joel: And So It Goes. She said that the singer “couldn’t really remember what he did when he was drinking, and so he didn’t really know how he could hurt people.”
