Police say a man who doused a Virginia city councilman in gasoline and set him on fire told investigators he wanted the attack to be fatal.

A suspect is in custody after a Danville, Virginia, city council member was set on fire Wednesday morning by a man police say he knows.

Authorities say Danville Councilman Lee Vogler knew his attacker and the assault stemmed from a personal matter, not Vogler’s service on the city council.
