The new U.S. ambassador to Japan has arrived in Tokyo and says he is optimistic that his country and its key Asian ally will reach a deal in their ongoing tariff negotiations.

The US and Japan kicked off tariff negotiations with an aim to reach a deal as soon as possible but did not discuss currency issues, Japan’s top negotiator Ryosei Akazawa said.

With the 24 percent additional tariffs on Japan suspended for 90 ninety days for negotiations, the U.S. and Japan should approach this moment as a chance to forge a new economic compact.
