The Baton Rouge region can expect severe storms — including potential tornadoes — Saturday afternoon and evening, according to the National Weather Service, with wind gusts peaking at over 60 miles per hour. Meteorologist Philip Grigsby with the NWS in New Orleans said residents should stay alert and weather aware in case of tornado warnings.

The Baton Rouge area is split between a slight risk (2/5) and an enhanced risk (3/5) for severe weather. The Florida parishes, Pointe Coupee Parish and the northern half of Iberville, West and East Baton Rouge and Livingston parishes are under an enhanced risk. Most of Mississippi and a sliver of western Alabama are also included.

Most heavy thunderstorms last under an hour. State officials recommend getting off at the nearest exit and waiting at a store if visibility drops.
