Shortstop Anthony Volpe was among the batters to have a standout moment, with his two-run home run in the first giving the Yankees a 5-0 lead off of former Dodgers pitcher Walker Buehler. Volpe was promptly hit on the elbow by a pitch from Buehler in the second inning, and exited as a 'precautionary' measure.

Boston made its first run at the Yankees in the sixth when Warren lost the strike zone after five solid innings. He gave up a leadoff triple by Jarren Duran and then issued three walks around Wilyer Abreu's sacrifice fly, and manager Aaron Boone had seen enough.

Warren held Boston scoreless through four innings, then surrendered a home run to 22-year-old Marcelo Mayer to lead off the fifth. It was the first career homer for Mayer, one of baseball’s premier prospects, in his 10th MLB game.
