Alaska communities in the Aleutians were under a tsunami advisory Tuesday after a magnitude 8.8 earthquake struck off the coast of Kamchatka at about 3:25 p.m. Alaska time.

One of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded struck Russia's Far East early Wednesday, sending tsunami waves into Japan and Hawaii and across the Pacific.

The large earthquake off of Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula triggered a tsunami warning for part of the Aleutians, and an advisory for other parts of the state.
