Ammonia and smelling salts have long been used by NFL players before and during games to give them an extra pick-me-up whenever they need a boost of energy. This includes any form of smelling salts and ammonia capsules or inhalers.

The NFL sent a memo to teams Tuesday banning all forms of ammonia inhalants and smelling salts from games, pregame activities and halftime, following an FDA warning about their unproven safety and efficacy.
