More than 250 million people in the U.S.—nearly three quarters of the population—are experiencing moderate, major or extreme risk of heat effects on July 28, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Weather Service.

The thermometer at Tampa International Airport topped out at 95 on Monday afternoon, below the 100 degrees it reached on Sunday, which was the highest temperature recorded in Tampa since weather record-keeping began in 1890. However, humidity pushed the feels-like temperature to a heavy 117 degrees at about 3 p.m.

Tampa temperatures hit triple digits Sunday for the first time in recorded history, the National Weather Service said. Why it matters: Extreme heat will continue into Tuesday, with a heat advisory in effect from noon until 7pm for much of the Tampa Bay area.
