US president Donald Trump's efforts to derail a successful wrap-up of the G20 summit in Johannesburg failed. Trump boycotted the meeting and the US told other countries through diplomatic channels not to sign a communiqué.

Tensions between the U.S. and Canada remain high following months of Trump administration hardball over trade deals.

With reference to Trump’s decision not to send any US representatives to the first G20 on African soil, Ramaphosa said “boycott politics never work. It’s always best to be inside the tent than outside of the tent. The tent is the G20. All countries are here.”
