Flags across New Jersey are flying half-staff and will remain for a while. Here's why, when they'll be lowered.

In an Oct. 21 meeting, the city council approved amendments to the city's flag policy that only allow for the American flag, the Washington state flag, and the city of Federal Way flag outside of city hall. The POW/MIA flag will still be flown in accordance with state law.

Dovey, who has served 18 years and leaves office in December, proposed creating a community-run “flag park” as an alternative. He suggested the city donate a grassy lot near 348th Street, next to Hanrui Garden and the Little League fields, to a nonprofit that would manage the space and allow cultural groups to raise their own flags.

The flag is a tribute to a Detroit tradition that began in 1923, when the original J.L. Hudson’s building unfurled what was then the largest American flag in the world. That one measured 230 feet long and 90 feet high and was displayed each year for Armistice Day, now known as Veterans Day.
