The helicopter ran into a powerline and crashed Thursday morning on the Mississippi River near East Alton, Illinois, officials said.

The crash, which happened near the border of Missouri and Illinois, closed a bridge into Illinois. A witness said it “just disintegrated” after coming in contact with a power line.

The Mississippi River has reopened to vessel traffic north of St. Louis after closing because a helicopter crashed into a barge on Thursday, killing two people, the U.S. Coast Guard said on Friday. The interior U.
