The Geographic Names Information System database changed the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America earlier this week. It came after President Donald Trump's executive order on his first day in office calling for the change and the Department of the Interior's adoption of the new name last month.

Following the lead of the Geographic Names Information System, Google has changed the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America on Google Maps. Google announced two weeks ago that it would change the name of the body of water between Mexico and Florida when GNIS made the change, it would follow suit.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum says her government is not ruling out filing a civil lawsuit against Google if it maintains its stance of calling the stretch of sea between northeastern Mexico and the southeastern United States the “Gulf of America.
