Resting on the seafloor, this colossal statue once welcomed visitors to the temple of Amun-Gereb, erected in the fifth century B.C. at the Nile port of Thonis-Heracleion.

Some experts have suggested that the original plan was to connect KV20 with the sanctuary of Amun via a tunnel through the interposing cliff, but the poor quality of the rock prevented it.
