The tropics remain active as the WLOX First Alert Weather Team continues to monitor the western Caribbean and southern Gulf of Mexico where tropical development is possible.Area to watch in Caribbean and GulfThe National Hurricane Center has highlighted a region for potential tropical development during the first week of October over the western Caribbean and southern Gulf of Mexico.

The system is in the Central American Gyre — a large low-pressure area that forms over Central America in the spring and fall. It creates storms and spin from the eastern Pacific into the Caribbean, and can unleash hurricanes and tropical storms near the end of hurricane season.
