Known as Kunio-kun’s Three Kingdoms in Japan, the game is based on an earlier title in the franchise, Downtown Special: River City Historical Drama!, released for the Famicom in 1991.

Many of these merits can be found in Total War Warhammer 3 - you can spot bits of Three Kingdom's DNA spread around that game here and there. But Three Kingdoms in its ultimate form will never appear.
