Our target was to match the performance of the E46 M3, pushing a cool 100hp/liter at 333hp. Starting with a US spec 3.2-liter S52 engine rated at 240hp, there was a 93hp deficit to make up.

Motor The stock 3.2 liter S52 engine was ripped out and SFR started work on a 2.5 liter M50 block from a '92 325i, using the crank from a '96 328i 2.8 liter M52 motor.

With its later M3-sourced S52 engine and partner-in-crime gearbox, this 1987 BMW E30 convertible is just such a car.

This car was the result, and that means it has the S52 engine, five-speed transmission and limited-slip differential that the 3 Series M employed.
