About four months later, Dolson introduced DeVries as Indiana’s head basketball coach, replacing Mike Woodson after four seasons with an 82-53 record and two NCAA Tournament appearances. Dolson had over a month to really search for a new coach after announcing Feb. 7 that Woodson would step down after the season, but the process quickly sped up.

He values defensive rebounding and limiting turnovers, things he traces back to the year’s he spent as assistant under Dana Altman and Greg McDermott at Creighton. He also emphasizes getting out into transition and trying to get as many points against a “broken defense” as possible.

Make no mistake, though, DeVries' message was the same. He spent six seasons as Drake's head coach, leading the Bulldogs to more 20-win seasons in DeVries' tenure than the program had in its entire history, two regular-season Missouri Valley Conference titles and back-to-back league tournament championships before taking the West Virginia job.
