The roots of his success began in Murfreesboro, where he spent part of his childhood, and later to South Nashville. Betts was named MVP of the District 12-AAA basketball league and won Class AA All-City Player of the Year as a senior at Overton. He was The Tennessean's Boys Bowler of the Year as a junior. He has rolled a USBC-certified 300 game.

His best season, 2018, was the year he won AL MVP with the Red Sox.
