Minnesota state Sen. John Hoffman (D) and his wife, Yvette, who were both shot in their home by the suspect who is believed to have later killed state Rep. Melissa Hortman (D) and her husband, Mark, in a “politically motivated assassination” on Saturday, shared an update on their condition, noting they were “both incredibly lucky to be alive.”

A suspect is in custody after Minnesota State Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband were fatally shot Saturday, while State Sen. John Hoffman and his wife were wounded.

Before Minnesota state Rep. Melissa Hortman became a nationally recognized figure following her fatal shooting death alongside her husband Saturday morning — an act public officials have called an act of “political violence” — she was revered by colleagues as a dedicated public servant.

The man accused of killing a Minnesota lawmaker and wounding another went to the homes of two other lawmakers to carry out more carnage on the night of the shootings. But one of the other lawmakers was not home and the suspect left the other house after police arrived.

Authorities are still searching for the suspect 57-year-old Vance Boelter. Gov. Tim Walz said former Minn. House Speaker Melissa Hortman and Sen. John Hoffman were deliberately targeted.
