ROCKDALE COUNTY, Ga. — Neighbors who live near the BioLab chemical fire in Rockdale County are now saying it’s making them sick. Conyers resident Andy Owens told Channel 2′s Audrey Washington that he had to go to the hospital after he fell ill. Owens lives and works near the BioLab facility in Rockdale County.

Rockdale County has instituted a nightly shelter-in-place order, urging residents to stay indoors between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. for the remainder of the week.

Channel 2 Action News was there for the last major incident in 2020 when a similar situation forced Interstate-20 to close for six hours.

Rockdale County is asking residents once again to shelter-in-place due to a plume banking down in the county. The new alert comes hours after the county had lifted a previous shelter-in-place order for a fire that broke out at the Biolab chemical plant on Sunday.

Authorities on Monday night ended a shelter-in-place order for more than 90,000 people east of Atlanta following a weekend chemical plant fire that sent a massive plume of dark smoke into the Georgia sky and led to complaints about a strong chemical smell and haze.
