J.J. Spaun, 34, who started Sunday one stroke behind 54-hole leader Sam Burns, survived a terrible start and challenging elements to pull away from the pack and capture his first major title with a two-stroke win in the U.

Oakmont, Pa. – J.J. Spaun turned a sloppy mess of a U.S. Open at wet and nasty Oakmont into a thing of beauty at the end Sunday with two stunning shots that carried him to his first major championship.

He took the solo lead with a birdie on hole 17. It was his third of the day. He has played in 235 events since joining in 2017 and was the runner-up in 3. This is his second U.S. Open and he’s never had a Top 20 finish in a Major.
