In 2016, residents of Tyler, Texas, established the Texas African American History Museum with the intention of helping the community both preserve and transcend a painful past. Like many East Texas cities, Tyler has a troubled racial past defined by slavery, segregation, and violence.

On November 11, 2020 the city of Tyler donated the property of the former fire station to Empowerment CDC to house the museum.
