Western Red Stemmed Butter Bolete: Mushroom Identification and Uses

Found one of my favorite edible mushrooms, a Butter Bolete (Butyriboletus autumniregius). It is a mycorrhizal species that associates with hardwoods and mixed conifers in the California coast. It has a reddish/pink cap (fades brown), yellow pores that stain instantly blue when injured, and an olive brown spore print. It’s a delicious edible mushroom, but can be mistaken for Caloboletus (inedibly bitter) or Rubroboletus (poison), pay close attention to the pore color and color of the stem to tell

Related to the other “porcini” boletes like edulis, regius, and rex-veris - this mushroom has a darkish brown cap, brown stem, reticulation (webbing) at the top of the stem, and yellowish pores under the cap that do not stain blue. .I usually see this mushroom in the fall/winter season but it was awesome to see some fruiting during summer!
