I found some videos where I actually attempted to explain what I was doing. Maybe it will make sense, maybe it won’t, but here’s a look at my fabrication process for turning a 7”x14” chunk of wood into a dragon beam. Here’s a good visual showing how drawboring works. I predrill the holes in both the mortise side and the tenon side of the joint and purposely offset the holes so they don’t line up perfectly. Sometimes I get to use my ‘toys’ for work😁 We were cutting down a cluster of oak trees to get some beams with a natural sweep in them for an upcoming project. Roof framing fun from five years ago. My good friend built this house, he told me I could build the kitchen if I helped him frame it. Some of the old beams were in good enough shape to salvage and be used for braces, struts and collar ties. I’m not sure when the last time this slick was actually used, but I spent a few hours yesterday cleaning it up and putting an edge on it again. I had to grind about 1/8” off the tip to get past the big nicks it had in it. That was a slow process. Slow and steady wins the race. Had a pretty awesome day yesterday. We managed to get this bent up the old fashioned way…2 men, 1 block and tackle, 2 snatch blocks and 1 come-a-long. I’ve never stood a bent up without a crane before and there was no way we were getting one in to this site. Thankfully this is a small frame, I’m not sure I would want to use this method with a large frame. 2 more walls to go! Hopefully next week this one will be wrapped in it’s blanket of insulation. Expecting rain today so I won’t be installing panels. Since my installation process involves hanging Sheetrock on the outside of the frame before screwing the panels on I’m worried about them getting wet🤷‍♂️ There’s a bunch of different ways to do this but I prefer this method so when the beams shrink due to their drying process, there won’t be any gaps between the Sheetrock and the beams.
