I speak about the importance of layers all the time. This ear of the Red Fox was a little out of focus so the use of many subtle layers really helps to create that softness. Skipping layers and jumping to bright values to early can massively reduce the depth and level of realism that is achieved. The layers are also going to have an impact if the contrast is right. For this Red Fox drawing, I used PanPastels for the base layer. This allows me to map in my main shapes, the highlights and shadows and I can then refine everything from there with my pastel pencils. I like to build up a few layers before I jump into details to increase the depth of every section of the drawing.
