Vertical ventilation in firefighting is a tactical operation where firefighters release heat, smoke, and toxic gases from a burning structure by creating an opening in the highest point of the building—usually the roof. 👉 Purpose: ➡️To improve visibility inside the structure for search and rescue or interior attack. ➡️To reduce heat and smoke buildup, making conditions safer for firefighters and trapped occupants. ➡️To prevent flashover or backdraft by controlling the movement of hot gases. VERTICAL VENTILATION 🏡 You may see firefighters on the roof during a fire, cutting holes. That’s called vertical ventilation. It lets smoke and heat escape, making it safer for crews inside to find and rescue people, and faster to put the fire out.
